Armed Security Guards
Armed Security Guards
All armed security guard positions call for a special level of training. Armed security guards in particular require additional degrees of training, experience, and expertise. Carrying a firearm is an enormous responsibility, and one that demands restraint, logic, and quick-thinking, especially in threatening situations. Facilities, businesses, educational institutions, or venues that feel it necessary to have a security guard on staff will want to consider the benefits of hiring an armed security guard.
Qualifications of Armed Security Guards
The company that employs security guards is responsible for having an operating license and being insured. In the state of Michigan, no certification or license is required to become an armed security guard. However, a license to carry a firearm is required.
Firearm training hours in firearm handling and safety must also be completed before a weapons permit is issued. This training is meticulous – covering shooting, safety, weapons retention, self-defense, and the laws surrounding possession of a weapon – and the background check is rigorous to ensure that all armed security guards know how to properly use their weapon in an emergency and to guarantee that the guard is trustworthy. Once training has been completed, armed security guards will be issued a card allowing them to legally carry a firearm while on duty.
To qualify as an armed security, candidates must:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Be a U.S. citizen or registered resident alien.
- Have a Michigan driver’s license.
- Pass a background check.
- Have their fingerprints taken.
- Pass drug tests and not have a drug dependency.
- Not have any mental instability.
- Not be a convicted felon.
- Be in good physical condition.
While Michigan does not require training courses for security guards, individual security companies typically offer training in patrol, observation, incident reporting, legal matters, surveillance, documentation, customer service, first aid, and more.
Places Where Armed Security Guards Work
It is projected that the number of security guard jobs available in Michigan will rise over the next 10 years. With more and more threats, both foreign and domestic, and incidents occurring in the most unexpected locations, more and more businesses will find themselves utilizing armed security guards. Security guards, after all, are the first line of defense when it comes to protecting people and property. Many security companies prefer to employ security guards who are former military or former police officer. These individuals have the training and discipline to excel in such a critical position.
Armed security guards are often employed to work at the following locations:
- Concierge/front desk
- Plants or factories
- Energy yards
- Construction sites
- Car dealerships
- Schools
- Strip malls
- Vacant buildings
- Funeral homes
- Places of worship
- Hospitals

Armed security guards are in demand, and they have great opportunities for career advancement. Plus, working as the person who is responsible for the safety and security of people and establishments, being an armed security guard can give you the upper hand in resolving situations, ideally without ever having to remove your weapon from its holster.
